The Vodafone Rally de Portugal is one of the most iconic rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events of the year in Portugal. Confirmed on the WRC calendar through to 2028, the Rally de Portugal returns in 2027 to the north and centre of the country, with its service park based in Matosinhos, near Porto.
A Rally with History
Present on the WRC calendar since the very first season in 1973, the Rally de Portugal is one of the founding rounds of the world championship. Over more than five decades, it has become an unmissable fixture for drivers, teams and fans from around the world – not only for the technical demands of the route, but for the unique atmosphere that Portuguese fans create at every stage.
The gravel roads of northern and central Portugal – with their loose surface, blind crests and iconic jumps – are considered among the most challenging on the calendar. The Fafe stage, with its famous Pedra Sentada jump, is perhaps the most recognisable moment in all of WRC: tens of thousands of spectators lining the hillsides in a stadium-like atmosphere that no other rally can replicate.
What Happens During the Rally
The Rally de Portugal typically runs over four days, from Thursday to Sunday, in the following format:
- Thursday – Shakedown and Ceremonial Start. The action begins with the shakedown, where teams put their cars through their paces before the official competition gets underway. In the evening, the ceremonial start takes place in a historic city – in recent editions, Coimbra has provided the backdrop for this moment, with drivers parading before thousands of fans in the historic city centre.
- Friday and Saturday – Competition Days. The two most intense days of the rally, with multiple stages running through the roads of the north and centre – Lousã, Arganil, Amarante, Paredes and other tests that return year after year. These are also the days when the Spectator Zones are at their most lively.
- Sunday – Power Stage and Podium. The rally closes with the Power Stage, a timed special where drivers still compete for bonus championship points. The event traditionally concludes in Fafe, with the podium ceremony.
Where to Watch the Rally – Spectator Zones
The Rally de Portugal organisation provides several Spectator Zones each year, either free of charge or ticketed, all properly set up to welcome the public safely. These zones are clearly signposted on the ground and announced in advance, with road books and access maps available on the official website.
Practical Information
The Rally de Portugal takes place in May, across a geographical area covering Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Viseu, and the mountain ranges in between. Local roads become heavily congested on competition days, particularly on the approaches to the most popular Spectator Zones and the service park in Matosinhos.
Parking near the stages is extremely limited, and alternative access routes are frequently closed for safety reasons. Familiarity with the road books and careful planning of your movements in advance is essential to making the most of the experience.
